Vatsyayana probably wrote the best love manual, Kama Sutra, or Aphorisms on Love in Sanskrit. The name Kama Sutra is basically derived from two words, Kama and Sutra. Kama means desire and Sutra means the rules.

Kama SutraKama Sutra was translated in English by an Englishman, Sir Richard Burton. A very wise man indeed, as he translated the book to benefit people who only speak and understand English.

There are about one thousand two hundred and fifty slokas or verses in Kama Sutra. It basically discusses the spiritual characteristics of sexuality and features various sexual positions and methods to enhance the pleasures of sex.

It also tells us in detail about the art of seduction, courting, giving presents, kissing, preparation and use of aphrodisiacs, and the ethical and decent approach during marriage.

Ancient times

In ancient times, Hindus believed that there were three purposes of life such as: religious piousness (Dharma), material accomplishment (Artha), and sexual enjoyment (Kama). All three of them were considered equivalent and sex was distinguished as an earthly pleasure.

Kama Sutra not only explains about the earthly desires, but also explains as how one can be a master of their senses and how to achieve a high level of consciousness.

Some of the positions explained in Kama Sutra are explained in the following article. The names given to each position are basically derived from animals and nature that reflects the relationship of a couple.

Before going any further, you should also know that in Kama Sutra, a male reproductive organ is mentioned as a lingam and a female sexual organ is mentioned as a yoni.

The Missionary Position:
It is one of the most common positions adopted by people from all races. As you know, the female will lay flat on her back and the man is in between her legs to penetrate her. If a few cushions are placed under the buttocks of the woman, then it will be easier for her man to deeply penetrate her.

The Bee:
The woman is seated on the lingam with her feet up in the air. The man sits with his legs outstretched. She can rotate her body in order to have a deeper penetration. He can arch his body or can lift her buttocks or thighs to give her more pleasure.

The Monkey:
The man just lies flat on his back with the legs straight up. The woman then sits on his thighs by using his feet as a backrest. He lifts her up with his feet to start a to and fro or upward and downward stimulus. Women feel aroused in this position, as the stimulus is rolling their pelvis in a lateral or a circular motion.

The Lotus:
The women lying flat on her back, while the man should sit next to her so that she can lock both her ankles in his neck, giving him to room to enjoy himself.

The Deer:
The woman sits on her feet and hands, like a crawling position. The man kneels down as well and penetrates from behind.

The Tortoise:
The woman lay flat on her partner with her legs open, allowing her partner to approach her crotch. After achieving the right position, both of them will straighten their legs and rub their bodies sideways and horizontally against each other.

The Cat:
The women lies on her stomach. The man approaches from behind, and lifts her ankles to have his way. After that both of them will rock their bodies for pleasure.

The Elephant:
The woman just lie down on her stomach so that her partner can penetrate her from behind. She can open her legs to help him while penetrating her, or she can just squeeze her thighs to torture her partner with love.

The Swing:
The man just lies on his back and the woman just turn her back and stoop down on his lingam with her legs on the either side of his hips.

The Dog:
It is one of the classic positions, I guess you might have tried it. The woman is in a crawling position. The man approaches her from the back, grips her waist and then penetrates her.

The Wheel:
