The menstrual cycle or menses or periods is one part of the whole menstrual cycle. It is basically a 28 day cycle and occurs in women who are physically healthy and are not yet on menopause.

The menstrual period, also known as menstruation or menses, is just one part of the menstrual cycle. This cycle basically prepares women to be impregnated and starts when the menses are initiated.

The reproductive system prepares for the fertilization of the egg and the development of the fetus each month. The whole process is carried out by hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).

The menstrual cycle is divided into four parts or phases.

The initiation of menses is Phase I. The uterus is prepared for an embryo every month by thickening of the lining with blood and tissue. When an unfertilized egg is released, then the lining is shed from the uterus through cervix and finally through vagina.

In the menstrual cycle, the menstrual flow is composed of blood, mucus, and different cells. The color of the menstrual flow might be bright red or dark with clots.

Phase II is known as the pre-ovulation phase. In this phase, the ovaries prepare an egg, also known as ovum that is released in the fallopian tubes.

Phase III is known as ovulation. In this phase, the egg is released into the fallopian tubes. If the egg is now fertilized by a sperm cell, then it is attached to the uterine wall and a fetus starts to develop. This phase generally occurs approximately 14 days before the start of the next menstrual cycle.

Phase IV is known as the premenstrual phase. If the egg remains unfertilized, then the thick lining of the uterus is shed and the process will start all over again.

Month to month variation

The menstruation cycle varies every month and differs from individual to individual. Menstrual flow can be slow, moderate, or heavy. This phase lasts for about 3-5 days, but some women have their periods for about 14 days as well and it is considered as normally medically.

In young ages, girls may have irregular menses, which is quite normal as well, but medical help should be sought.

Menopause occurs in women at the age of 50. Menopause is a stage when woman are unable to ovulate and cannot become pregnant.
