History of Polygamy
Marriage is fundamentally viewed as a communal trend. But generally it is not necessary to get married for reproduction to take place. Due to this verity, deliberations concerning wedding have always been the core on legal, cultural and religious importance of the ritual itself and all that it necessitates.
Different types of marriages such as monogamous and polygamous marriages subsist merely to accomplish essential social or religious compulsions forced on a person by other forces.
Polygamy within Christianity
In today’s world, Christianity is the major antagonist of polygamy. Bible is the basis of Christianity and Christian faith. At some places in bible it is noted that some patriarchs had polygamous marriages, such as Moses (Numbers 12:1) and Abraham (Genesis 16:1, Genesis 16:3 and Genesis 25:1). St. Augustine explained in detail these cases of polygamy in The Good of Marriage.
In the ancient times it was necessary to get married to have children and it was considered a sin if a child was born without the man and the woman being married to each other and therefore polygamy was followed. At this point in time such prerequisite does not exist and the Catholic Church has acknowledged polygamy as unlawful.
During the era of Protestant Reformation, people who observed Protestant faiths provisionally authorized the observance of polygamy on the foundation of some of the biblical provisions, but other people overtly deprecated it. Therefore, protestant Christians after a while decided to desert polygamy on the whole.
Church of the Latter Day Saints, or more commonly, the Mormon Church decided to carry on with the ritual of polygamy. The Mormons, relatively simply permit the occasion of polygamous marriages, and plainly educate their members about this ideal and proclaimed their contribution to it widely.
The founder of the Church, Dr. Joseph Smith, Jr. founded the policy of polygamy on the biblical orientation mentioned in the preceding paragraph. Polygamy was accomplished from 1852 until 1890.
After 1890 the church was subjected to great political and legal pressure and at last the Mormons affirmed it illegal, with the members who sustained its practice suffering excommunication. Some of the church members declined to hold on to the new trend and migrated to other territories like Canada and founded fundamentalist churches over there.
Polygamy within today’s society
In today’s world polygamy is a practice, which is not so popular and a significant fraction of the world negate it.
At present it is extensively acknowledged by the majority of political and legal systems that polygamy has been unsuccessful to convene the general moral and legal principles essential to preserve world and communal discipline.
Now, this novel idea is possibly the consequence of two main factors, i.e., the spread of Christianity and the additional realistic deliberations of several divorces and property resolution of spouses.
The concluding issue simply concerns the difficulties and differences attendant to having numerous wives or husbands, all struggling for a part of property upon the general spouse’s death or divorce. Similarly revolting is the unsteadiness that could outcome in the substance of the wives’ and children’s standing in the world. It is a universal acknowledged law that a person’s standing should not be subjected to unnecessary ambiguity.
The increase of Christianity or religious development in common, is a multifaceted factor that may have affected the point of the work about plural marriages.
