All about PMS
Women suffer from a phase, in which they experience strange symptoms like crying spells, mood swings, bloating, headache, fatigue, cramps, and etc. Their mood swings are off the hook and they can get really angry without any reason and after a while will burst into tears and will feel very fragile.
Men generally refer to this phase as that time of the month and it is commonly known as PMS. Women also spoil themselves in this particular phase by eating junk and drinking excess alcohol.
What is PMS?
In medicine, PMS is known as premenstrual syndrome and women suffering from it are given medical assistance for their emotional and physical symptoms.
It is basically a syndrome that generates emotional and physical symptoms occurring before the menstruation cycle and disappears after initiation of menstruation cycle. Women may experience PMS in early ages and after menopause.
Symptoms of PMS
If you are suffering from bloating, cramps, fatigue, breast tenderness, and irritability, then you definitely have PMS syndrome and be assured that you are not alone, a lot of the women are going through the same situation and there are over 150 symptoms associated with PMS. Sometimes some symptoms are mild and do not interfere in the ADLs, but sometimes these symptoms are debilitating.
The psychological symptoms associated with PMS are crying spells, depression, anxiety, anger, sadness or irritability, mental functioning such as problems with concentration and such as difficulty in concentrating and impaired libido.
There are a variety of physical symptoms associated with PMS and the most common symptoms are fatigue, insomnia, headache, acne, cramps, breast tenderness, bloating, joint or muscle pain. Some women may experience symptoms of stomach upset, constipation, or diarrhea. And some women start eating comfort food like carbohydrates, chocolate, and candies etc.
Diagnosing PMS
PMS cannot be diagnosed through any medical test. When women suffer from the symptoms mentioned above and are tested by their primary care physicians and their tests are negative for any other illness then it is diagnosed that they are suffering from PMS.
It is not necessary that women have PMS when they are experiencing these symptoms. They might be suffering from anemia, diabetes, hypothyroidism, perimenopause, endometriosis, dysmenorrhea and autoimmune disorders.
Doctors and researchers are conducting various studies to know PMS in-depth. And as of yet, there is no single cause of PMS that has been ruled out and there are many factors such as genetics, environmental, nutrition, and stress are associated with PMS.
