Venereal Diseases, or commonly known STD (sexually transmitted diseases) are one of those diseases which are passed over from one person to another through sexual interaction between the partners.

The sexual contact may be through oral, vaginal or oral sex. Another lesser known, uncommon term for this disease is sexually transmitted infections.

A history of Venereal diseases

The human race has always been plagued by Venereal Diseases. With the spread of British Empire all over the world, the sailors and soldiers brought back various types of disease to England.

This explains the fact that the first Venereal Disease clinic was started at the famous London Dock Hospital in 1747, on January 31st.

Gonorrhea and Syphilis were the greatest threats at the time and the clinic was established chiefly to study them. The doctors considered these diseases incurable and thus concentrated on curing the symptoms of the disease.

The introduction of antibiotics

With the unearthing of antibiotics, the scenario changed. Many of the previous venereal disease became curable.

Campaigns were launched by Public Health authorities for eradicating the diseases and thus there was a decline in the number of cases. But with the arrival of the 1980s came genital herpes and AIDS. These are incurable by contemporary medicine.

CondomTypes of Venereal diseases

The most widespread VDs are Chancroid, Gonorrhea, Aids, LGV, Syphilis, Candidasis, Herpes and Chlamydia Infection.

Parasites like scabies and public lice are also spread by sexual contact.

Protect yourself

Using a condom during sex is the simplest way of shielding yourself from VD.

It may not prevent you from public lice but it will definitely thwart spreading of infections and thus spare you the gratification of a visit to the STD ward. It becomes all the more important because in spite of all the pains, AIDS symbolizes death even today.
